Do you ever feel weighed down by the sheer volume of things in your home? Clutter may seem harmless, but it’s a toleration many of us endure that silently saps our energy and joy.

A few months ago, I began interviewing readers of my book, ‘Eliminate What You Tolerate,” in preparation for an online course I’m creating. Toleration is anything, person, or situation that persistently drains you of time, energy, and focus. Tolerations come in many forms, including frustrations, annoyances, broken items, bad habits, and unfinished business, to name a few.

By conducting these interviews, I was eager to learn: 1. the types of tolerations my readers discovered as they utilized this technique and 2. their experiences as they began eliminating their tolerations.

The stories my readers shared in 2024 were consistent with what my students and clients have experienced since I first shared this concept 30 years ago:

– The first toleration most people identify is clutter.

– The impact of clutter is a sense of overwhelm and a loss of energy.

– The first benefit of clearing clutter is increased energy and inner peace.

Considering that nearly 20% of Americans face fatigue that disrupts their everyday lives, tackling clutter becomes a worthy endeavor.

Why Clutter Drains Us

Imagine your energy as flowing water. Wherever your focus goes, so does your energy. If you’re staring at messy kitchen counters or a closet stuffed with clothes you don’t wear, your energy gets stuck there, too. When you clear this clutter, you free up that energy for bigger, better things.

While clutter is often considered a physical disorder and a lack of organization, its effects are deeply felt on emotional, spiritual, and financial levels.

One interviewee’s poignant insight illuminates the path forward: “My environment is foundational to my peace of mind and well-being. I’ve realized that chaos in my home mirrors chaos in my mind and vice versa. A chaotic mind drains my energy. But when I restore order in my environment, my energy rises, and my outlook brightens.”

This insight aligns with timeless wisdom: “Where focus goes, energy flows.” Decluttering redirects your focus and liberates energy for pursuits that truly matter.

Your Clutter-Free Journey: A Room-by-Room Approach

A surprising 54% of people feel overwhelmed by clutter, and 78% don’t know where to start decluttering. Let’s change that together with a simple, step-by-step approach:

Set your Intention: Define what you want to achieve, like creating space, restoring order, reducing stress, or creating a peaceful environment. Keeping your intention front and center throughout your project will keep you moving forward.

Choose Your Starting Room: Whether it’s the most frequently used room, like the kitchen, or a high-traffic area, select the space that will give you the highest impact and biggest sense of accomplishment right from the get-go.

Break it Into Mini-Projects: Make a written list of smaller tasks within the room. In the kitchen, for example, tackle tasks like clearing countertops, reorganizing a utensil drawer, and eliminating expired food from a pantry shelf. Dividing a room into smaller tasks makes the process more manageable and less intimidating.

Use the Four-Box Method: Label four boxes Donate, Gift, Recycle, and Trash. This categorization simplifies decisions as you consider each item you’re releasing.

Celebrate Progress: Keep your written list handy and use it to track your journey. Doing so will boost your sense of accomplishment as well as help you know where to start back up after a break.

Tips for Success

– Ensure you’re well-fed and hydrated to keep your energy levels up.

– Play music or a favorite podcast to create an enjoyable atmosphere.

– Set a timer to maintain focus without overwhelm and to remind you to take breaks.

– Take regular breaks: Decluttering can be emotionally and physically taxing. Regular breaks will keep you refreshed and focused.

A Real-Life Transformation: Bonnie’s Story

Meet Bonnie, a retiree who began eliminating tolerations where many others do: decluttering. Motivated by “Eliminate What You Tolerate,” Bonnie realized her overstuffed closet, bursting with corporate attire she no longer wore, was a daily stress trigger. So, she donated her business attire to an organization that supports women stepping back into the professional world. Afterward, she organized her remaining casual clothes by type and color, creating a sense of order and peace.

The result? The outcome? A closet that perfectly suits her new lifestyle, less stress, and a rejuvenated spirit.  As Bonnie joyfully shared, “I feel invigorated! I love my airy, organized closet, and now, putting together cute, casual outfits is so easy.”

The Many Rewards of Decluttering

Decluttering brings immediate rewards. Still, the process itself can be tiring. If you find your resolve flagging, keep these powerful benefits in mind:

1. Enhanced Energy: Clearing clutter is like lifting a weight off your shoulders. You’ll likely feel invigorated and more enthusiastic about your environment.

2. Improved Focus: A tidy space leads to a clear mind, boosting productivity and creativity.

3. Inner Peace: Simplifying your surroundings can turn a chaotic home environment into a sanctuary of peace.

4. Financial Savings: With clutter gone, you’re less likely to make unnecessary purchases, saving you money.

Tips for Maintaining a Clutter-Free Life

1. Adopt a “One-In, One-Out” Rule: For every new item you bring home, let go of one. Better yet, go for “One-In, Two-Out” if simplifying or downsizing is your intention.

2. Regularly Review Possessions: Schedule seasonal decluttering to prevent the accumulation of unused and unwanted belongings.

3. Practice Mindful Consumption: Be intentional about purchases, considering actual need and long-term value.

4. Embrace Minimalism: Focus on quality over quantity, valuing experiences over possessions.

Conclusion

Confronting and overcoming clutter is more than just cleaning the house—it’s about reclaiming your sanctuary. The freedom from a clutter-free space transcends mere physical appearance; it renews your spirit and calms your mind. As you conclude each project, soak in the renewed energy and focus it brings to your life. Start today with small steps and watch your home transform into a space of peace and inspiration.
