Many women dream of traveling in retirement—exploring new cultures, reconnecting with themselves, and finally saying yes to the adventures they postponed while building careers, families, and responsibilities.

Yet when we look at the numbers, travel can feel out of reach .

The good news? With a little clarity, creativity, and intention, you can fund meaningful travel without sacrificing your financial security or peace of mind.

Here’s how.

Step 1: Start with a Simple Budget Review

Before saving for travel, take a fresh look at where your money is going right now

Review your monthly statements and identify “spending leaks”—unused subscriptions, memberships you no longer enjoy, or habits that no longer align with who you are today.

Then ask yourself: Is my spending aligned with the life I want to live in this next chapter?

Often, freeing up money for travel doesn’t require earning more—it simply requires choosing more intentionally.

Step 2: Create a Dedicated Travel Fund

Next, set up a separate savings account specifically for travel—your Travel Fund.

Automate weekly or monthly transfers so saving happens effortlessly. Even $25 per week adds up to $1,300 per year and seeing that money labeled for something joyful builds motivation and momentum.

Your Travel Fund turns dreaming into planning—and planning into action.

Step 3: Rethink Retirement Income

Instead of focusing only on what you have , consider what you can still create .

Could you generate an extra $800 per month doing something you enjoy—consulting, teaching, coaching, travel writing, or part-time community work?

That $800 per month equals nearly $10,000 per year—the same as having $250,000 producing income at a 4% withdrawal rate.

This shift in your perspective shows how purpose-driven income can dramatically expand your freedom—funding travel while keeping you engaged, social, and fulfilled.

Step 4: Use Credit Cards Strategically to Fund Travel

Credit cards often get a bad rap—and rightfully so when they’re misused. But when used strategically and paid off monthly, they can become a powerful tool for funding travel.

Here are three Smart Money tips my husband and I use to turn everyday spending into free or deeply discounted trips :

1. Focus on Hotel Loyalty We use a hotel rewards card and stay with the same brand whenever possible. Last year, we redeemed points for a free night at a Ritz-Carlton that normally costs $450 per night. Combined with a bonus-point promotion, we saved nearly $900 on that trip alone.

2. Know Your Card Perks Many cards offer valuable benefits that go unused—like free checked bags, including golf clubs, or travel credits. On one trip, we saved $250 simply by using the right card perks and redeeming points.

3. Choose a Card That Pays You We also use a card that pays 5% cash back on groceries, gas, and pharmacy purchases. Because we pay the balance in full each month, that cash back is pure bonus. One year, we received $1,800—enough to cover flights, meals, and a rental car for an entire trip.

The key rule: If you’re carrying a balance and paying interest, the strategy doesn’t work. Credit cards should support your dreams—not drain your finances.

Step 5: Dream, Plan, and Go

Once your Travel Fund is in place—and you’re using smart tools to support it—it’s time to dream with intention.

Research destinations, ideal travel seasons, and experiences that excite you. When the money is already set aside, planning becomes empowering instead of stressful.

Travel transforms from wishful thinking into confident action.

Travel Is an Investment in You!

Travel enriches the soul. It builds confidence, expands perspective, and creates lifelong memories. When paired with financial clarity, it becomes one of the most rewarding investments you can make in yourself.
