“There are people who put their dreams in a little box and say, ‘Yes, I’ve got dreams, of course I’ve got dreams. ‘ Then they put the box away and bring it out once in awhile to look in it, and yep, they’re still there.”
~ Erma Bombeck
We all have dreams. Of course, they change over time, but each of us has that one dream that we keep in a secret box and take out every so often just to check and then put it back.
Why is that? Could it be that we feel that dream is just too big or to bold for us?
When women book an initial coaching call with me I have this one question that changes the conversation and it is, “What scares you to death, but if you just did it, it would change your life forever?”
That’s the one you need to ask yourself, because that’s how you find your soul’s purpose.
Your soul is always calling out to you, inviting you to move towards your purpose, but unless we learn how to get quiet, we probably won’t hear it, so it tries again and again.
Then one day, it hits you like a wall of bricks, often in a very negative way. If you are tired, burned out, and bad things keep happening to you, stop and give yourself a time out. You will need to get quiet to hear the whisper of your soul.
My friend, Peggi, had this happen to her. She was just about to retire when the technology fiasco happened. Remember when the NASDAQ lost 75% of its value from 2000-2002? Many people were diversified, but many weren’t. Regardless, everyone lost money during that period. At first she was so upset with herself, but then something happened. It was Peggi’s defining moment.
Peggi decide to think outside the box. She decided that even though she was 60, she was going to apply for the Peace Corp. She was going to go away for 2 1/2 years, let her money heal and grow back, and she would go try something totally new. Even though she was scared to death, she made the decision, and that’s when her life shifted and the adventure began.
After jumping through all kinds of hoops, including immunizations, Peggi was accepted for a Peace Corps project in Africa. Since I was her financial advisor at the time, I had my marching orders, too. Let the money grow for her retirement when she came back in 2 1/2 years.
Well, Peggi stayed in touch and we actually published all her letters that she sent to us in our ezine. Those letters were amazing and she developed a huge following.
When she came back home, I had lunch with her at a fancy restaurant, and when I asked her if she was happy with her financial situation now that she was back, her answer surprised me.
“Katana, I cannot believe I am drinking clean water with ice cubes in a beautiful glass after getting my water from a river every day. In fact, my Social Security now looks like a Millionaire Lifestyle. I’m going back to build a well for my village, and I want you to take the money from my retirement account.”
I was blown away! We supported her by helping her do a fundraiser to build that well. This is just one story of women doing great things in their 3rd Act. There are so many more.
What will be your story? How will you live your life? What will be your legacy? Do you have a plan? Do you have the support?
